Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
