Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any harm in association with the event," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
